Day 29: Memphis, here we come!

It was another long travelling day. On these days I tend to choose an interesting looking restaurant or town to aim for to have lunch at and then we have something to look forward to. Today we stopped at Swett’s another American Southern restaurant. This time it is more cafeteria style. You choose the food you want and pay for your choices. First is the dessert, then different meats, then different vegetables. Drinks are at the end.

The food line

The food was really delicious and I especially liked the tangy lemon filling in my lemon meringue pie. Although the meringue was too much like marshmallow. Heng really liked his cheesy broccoli.

Great chicken and cabbage.

Heng's delicious veges

We saw the skyline of Nashville but didn’t stop as we were heading to Memphis. We arrived in Memphis at about 5.30pm or so we thought. Apparently different parts of Tennessee are in different timezones. So we wound our clocks back an hour and gained some extra time.

Nashville

Our accommodation for the next two nights is the Peabody Hotel. This hotel has some very famous residents. Ducks. We checked in just in time to see the ducks go back up in the lift to their penthouse suite. From 11am to 5pm they hang out in the fountain downstairs swimming happily. They are quite cute.

The duck on the lift floor... stay tuned for more duck photos tomorrow.
Somehow we had booked ourselves into the private clubroom floor. This meant that only people with rooms on this level can access this floor. There is a lounge that also functions as the breakfast room, afternoon snack room, nighttime cookies and milk room and also just a great place to sit at any time.

Our room was big and comfortable. We were so surprised with the evening turn down service as we also got some delicious chocolates. There were lots of subtle duck images around and there were even stickers on the toilet paper.

Treats waiting for us in the evening.
Dinner was at what has apparently been awarded the best Thai restaurant in Memphis, Bangkok Alley. In our opinion it wasn’t good at all. Also we are still wondering why there are so many Thai Sushi places in America. Why that combination? Perhaps we should stick to BBQ and other things Memphis is famous for. However we don’t seem to be able to manage to eat that style of food more than once a day.

Papaya Salad
After dinner we went for a walk to the famous Beale Street, which was only a 5-minute walk from our hotel. This street is filled with bars and food places and also on the night that we came to check it out there were a lot of very nice looking motorcycles.

Heng is getting excited for tomorrow after seeing this

Cool bike. Can I ride it?

  1. Hi! Beth & H.Yip,
I like that yellow colour bike. Looks similar to the Batman bike. Real cool. Looking forward to viewing the photos from your Graceland visit. Ma/Pa
