Day Five: Guns and Mobsters

Hotel check out was the first item on the agenda today. That was accomplished smoothly and then we hit the Vegas strip one last time. First we went to the Rainforest CafĂ© for breakfast. I thought the breakfast was just ok…. not fantastic but the atmosphere was really good. We were sitting next to an aquarium of beautiful tropical fish.

I call this the kissing fish

We enjoyed using the buses yesterday and bought a bus pass for today as well. Freemont Street (the old Vegas) was somewhere that we hadn’t been yet so we decided to go and check it out. Laura was feeling a little off probably from dehydration so we stocked up on more fluids.

I really liked Freemont Street. It had an old Vegas vibe with lots of crazy signs and old style casinos. We also had a chance to browse the ridiculously tacky souvenir shops.

After walking around for a while we thought to find somewhere out of the heat. Our choice was the Mob Museum. It was a little difficult to find at first and we probably walked an extra hot block trying to find it. It is on the next street that runs parallel to Freemont Street and is in an old building. Probably one of the oldest left in Vegas.

The price was $20 per adult to get in. We were a little sceptical about paying that much for a museum that didn’t look that big. But in Laura’s words, “We had made it this far so we might as well go in.”

It turned out to be a great decision. We spent over 3 hours there making our way through the three floors. Exhibits at the museum included interactive one like a line up and touch screens, as well as many short documentaries. Of course there were lots of pictures and items from the mob days.

As you can see Laura let her inner mobster out:

The museum is not for young children or the faint of heart. There are a lot of graphic images and violence. However parts were really interesting such as those relating to the creation to Vegas and how the cops managed to catch some of the mobsters. I would really recommend this museum if you have a spare afternoon.

For dinner we headed back to the strip and had Beijing noodles at Beijing 9 in Caesars Palace. They were delicious handmade fresh noodles and we really enjoyed the food.

Since we have an overnight flight we headed to the airport after dinner. Security is strict!! Shoes were removed and water was disposed of. However the line still moved relatively clearly. In case we hadn’t done enough gambling in Vegas itself (we actually didn’t do any crazy as that sounds). We could get some last minute slots in at the airport. Still not tempted, we have managed to leave Vegas without having done any gambling at all. However it has been an amazing time!!

Oh yeah I forgot we also woke up this morning with Tattoos!!
