Day Six: The real New York, New York

The overnight flight left me tired and weary. While we were lucky enough to get exit row seats, the seats on this Delta plane did not recline and I couldn’t sleep for any length of time sitting up. I will have to get a window seat next time so I have something to lean on.

Despite the tiring flight we were excited to finally arrive in the real New York. The weather was not exactly welcoming, very cloudy with the occasional rain shower. However cooler weather was a nice change from the searing heat of the Las Vegas desert.

We arrived at our hotel at about 9am and they let us check in straight away!! That was so nice of them and we were able to get a few hours of sleep. We are staying at the Belvedere, which is in a great location about a block or two from Times Square and right near the theatre district. So far we are happy with this hotel.

In the afternoon we walked down to Times Square and took in the sights.

Gotta Love the Signs

Run! The statue came to life

I don't know what to say about this but Laura thinks it's a good look
We grabbed a quick bite to eat at a Café and I had an excellent made to order salad. The banana cupcake for desert was not so fantastic though. A little bit too sweet and cloying.

In the evening we had prebooked going up Top of the Rock. This is the observatory at the top of the Rockefeller building. It was easy to enter at the basement level. We were then sent up two floors to get our picture taken (which we were able to bi-pass) and watch some interesting short documentaries about the history of the building.

Then it was into a lift and straight up 63 floors or so to the top. The lift has a clear ceiling and you can see yourself moving upwards which is quite interesting. Once at the top there are three levels of viewing platforms. Despite the persistence of clouds we were able to get some great photos.

Sparkly New York
Love the Empire State Building, Love New York
I was in the mood to try and American Hamburger and there were certainly lots of places happy to oblige nearby. We made our order and since they were closing took it back to the room with us. The hamburger was delicious! Very soft and juicy, nothing like hamburgers we have at home. While eating our burgers we entertained ourselves by watching the baseball on TV. What could be more American than that?
